How much money do criminal law lawyers make in a year?

It depends.
There are criminal defense attorneys who are in private practice who make very, very good money (think Johnnie Cochran, who defended O.J. Simpson). Most private practice criminal defense attorneys spend a lot of time on things like DWI’s and assault cases, though, that aren’t very lucrative unless your client is a professional athlete.
There are criminal defense attorneys who are public defenders, and who are therefore employees of the state/county/city where they work. They generally make in the range of $30 – $90K per year, depending on where they’re working. Most fall more toward the low end of that range.
There are prosecutors (states attorneys, city attorneys, county attorneys), who are also public employees, so their income falls into about the same ranges, possibly a bit higher.
